These days, there is a strong emphasis on startups to create mobile versions of their sites. The rise of smartphone and tablet use has meant that businesses must cater more to these mobile users. The thing is, many of us don’t know where to start when creating a mobile-friendly website.

Sure, there are plenty of tutorials on the Internet that can help you get started. Of course, you want to make sure that the work you put in will be worth your toil. When undertaking such a project, it’s vital you know the facts before you begin. That’s why, for today’s blog post, I will share with you the top five myths of mobile websites you need to know.

Why is that information useful to you, I hear you ask? Well, the answer is simple: you need to capitalize on the mobile revolution. And you need to do so the right way from day one! Without further ado, read and digest these five mobile website myths before you start!

Myth #1: You must create a brand new website

Believe it or not, this myth can also be a fact in certain circumstances! Let’s say that you’ve got a desktop-only site. If you look at it in a mobile browser, it might not render well. In those cases, it makes sense to create a new one from scratch and make it responsive.

But, if you’ve got a responsive site, you won’t need to build another one. From a web design point of view, all you need to do is ensure it works well on mobiles and tablets!

Myth #2: Mobile websites have no impact on SEO

If anyone has told you that is a fact, you should point out the error of their ways! It’s in your interests to ensure your site renders correctly on a mobile browser. Google and other search engines will penalize non-mobile-friendly sites. And, as we all know, search engine penalties are bad for SEO.

Myth #3: A mobile website is just an add-on for your main site

Some people will tell you that mobile sites are just “add-ons” for their main ones. And those that have responsive sites assume the mobile element is just an “extra.”

The truth is, a mobile-friendly website is the star of the show! The web is full of research that proves mobile-friendly sites increase conversions. Most visitors of some websites are from mobile devices, believe it or not!

Myth #4: You should create different designs for mobile users

Some web designers will tell you that it’s crucial to keep mobile layouts simple. But, you don’t need to go as far as stripping multimedia content from your pages. Nor must you use an entirely different design!

Yes, you will need to make some layout changes to fit smaller screens. However, you don’t need to create a separate identity for mobile visitors!

Myth #5: The market share of mobile web users will drop

It’s no secret that the market share of IoT (Internet of Things) devices is growing. Still, that doesn’t mean IoT devices will take over the mobile browsing share of the market. After all; everyone will still use mobile devices for many years to come! It’s still important to put mobile-centric design at the forefront of your mind.
